Mancunian Way Walking Tour

CUBE Gallery

2-5pm

Sunday 4th March

The Mancunian Way walking tour is taking place in conjunction with the  Infra_MANC Exhibition being held in CUBE between 27th Feb and 2nd March.

The tour will focus on one of Manchester's key pieces of infrastructure, The Mancunian Way, the city's own "Highway in the Sky". Built during the 1960s, the Mancunian Way represents a symbol of optimism, a road to a Modernist utopian future, where Manchester's Victorian landscape had been swept away, replaced by towering concrete blocks and super-fast highways.  Although this vision was never fully realised, the Mancunian Way continues to exert a strong presence on the city, a reminder of a time when urban planning was driven by principles other than market forces and rampant entrepreneurialism.

The tour will include a short presentation detailing the planning and construction of the Mancunian Way, before offering participants a chance to explore the sites and spaces of this iconic structure, to examine its relationship to the city and its communities.

The tour will be lead by Dr Steve Millington (Manchester Metropolitan University) and Maureen Ward (The Manchester Modernist Society).

The tour is free to attend, but participants must register in advance, as numbers are strictly limited.

Participants are reminded to arrive promptly at CUBE for a 2pm start.  The tour should be over by 5pm latest.

Participants are also advised to dress appropriately for the prevailing weather conditions and to wear suitable footwear for walking.  The tour is accessible.
